I am trying to remove the clutch and pully from my 76 A6 A/C compressor to change out the pully bearing. Autozone has loaner tools for this, so I get the clutch remover, installer and holding tools. The remover tool will not thread on to the clutch hub as it seems to be a tad too big, the installer tool that threads on to the spindle where the nut goes on is too small! The holding tool is just right (it's adjustable)! :mad How do I get this clutch off? I tried a regular puller but I will just bend the clutch and destroy it. Where do I get the right tools????
Sounds like you got the tools for an R4 compressor. You do need the right stuff to get the front hub off and snap-ring pliers for the rest of it. I could e-mail pictures if you have trouble getting the right ones.
Pictures would help! I see the same style tools that I borrowed from Autozone in J.C. Whitney and it says it will work with all GM compressors.
I have snap ring pliers. I have another 76 that the A/C compressor clutch slipped right off without a puller. I have done this before, but this other 76's clutch won't budge without the proper removal tool. I will go back to Autozone and see if they have a different tool.
