YES...if you are using the four hole grommet for the early cars.

What I was describing was using the grommet just for the cable on the later years.

Depends on the grommet. GM did not use the same one from 68 to 82.

I HAVE TO APOLOGIZE...

When I replied to this post initially....it just dawned on me that the grommet for the early Corvettes is the thick black rubber ones...and not the one that I WAS THINKING at the time.

I feel like such a DOOFUS!!!!!

Sorry for any confusion.

What I wrote does work on the later design grommets for the speedometer cable.

This may be the same one the link above goes to I'm not sure.

This is what we use in the shop and without it, you'll never get that grommet on the cable. (well you might but I don't want to spend the time trying).

You need to make the grommet and this tool a package deal, because the grommet I purchased from you is still laying on the shelf. I did manage to make the old grommet work with a little black silicone.

Not sure who made them, but I used to have a tubular device woven out of nylon that gripped the item like Chinese handcuffs and could pull large diameter objects thru a smaller diameter hole. I have a similar tool for pulling electrical wires when re-wiring a house.

I will take the time to look in my GM part illustration catalog and see if the grommet is listed by itself or it will clearly state that it is N.S. ( not serviceable)...which can make it a part of the cable.....or it will state that is IS a part of the cable....and if it is by itself...then it came by itself and was applied......either way...this grommet is not a big deal.

OK...Is every bodies 'thinking caps' on'????

I am surprised that no one wanted to give ideas.....other than 'loup68'.

We KNOW that the grommet has to stretch over the end if the cable that goes to the speedometer.

SO...what I use is a 3/8' drive extension. I apply some die-electric grease on the extension and correctly position the grommet and slide it on the extension......and the end of the extension where you would put your ratchet.....is WIDER....AND...'BINGO'...it oddly enough is as wide as the end of the speedometer cable where it clips into the speedometer.....SO...I clamp the extension in a vise to hold it...and while holding the cable end on the end of the extension where your ratchet goes...I slide the grommet up onto the wider area of the extension and ON the cable....WITHOUT CUTTING ANYTHING.

And if for some ODD reason you can not get the grommet on the extension....that is easy to do also...but I will let you figure that out.

*****REVELATION*****....I just figured out how I can make a tool that does this in a few seconds....so simple of an idea...I just have to get some stock and I will machine one out. My method above works...but this tool is literally idiot proof and so simple I will be able to do it standing in the shop with my hands and not even have to look at what I am doing.

DUB

I had to get this speedo cable grommet over a new speedo cable for my 1981 coupe w/o cruise. Here's the gromment… http://www.corvetteamerica.com/part-info?partno=X2577

I also bought this "tool" which was a $9 error... http://www.corvetteamerica.com/part-info?partno=42280

Using the 3/8 extension is the way to go. Worked perfectly. Used 3 in 1 oil as the lube. The extension is the perfect size for the speedo end of the cable. The tool was not even close to appropriate for this job.

Thanks DUB

Personally I think this is a blunder on GM. The last grommet available from GM is exactly the same as the grommet produced by Vol Vette as a reproduction.... So is it correct... Yeah, it's 100 percent spot on for what GM serviced. But was what GM serviced correct.... Hardly.

The only way to install the new cable grommet is to cut them (through the metal too) and slip them on the cable. I've got originals here and tomorrow I'll take a good look at one to see if there are any other variances.

I do have a tool here for installing tach cable grommets but just as I stated above, the reproduction speedo cable grommets are 100 percent exactly like the last GM grommet (I'll post the GM part number tomorrow, I don't have it on my laptop), and a royal pain to install.

Your part number EC18 / x2577 is the grommet I just said was easy using DUB’s method. No cutting. Took about a minute to do. It is the exact same grommet as original that I removed from the firewall.

Dub is creative for sure...

We use this tool in the shop.

But most don't have it and have issues getting it installed. I'm glad he posted this.

That tool wouldn't work on an 81. No threads on the cable end.

Heat up the grommet slightly with a heat gun, a little silicone grease and you can fit it on without too much drama.
My complaint is that none of the replacement grommets fit the hole in the firewall without notching the hole or making it bigger.
So stupid......

I had no issue with the hole. Fit fine.
