According to the factory service manual the timer is bad if the system operates but won't stay on for the full 15 minute cycle, in my case it only stays on for a second so I'm guessing I need one. But, they're apparently unobtainable for an '82, the only one that I can find is for an early '82. My guess is that it would be relatively easy to rewire if necessary but first I'd like to ask if anyone has run into this before?

While my 82 was born in March of 82 and I have replaced a lot of parts. I am not aware of early and late 82 parts or wiring being different. I bought my defrost switch from Corvette Central (Part #593092). The link is: http://www.parts123.com/corvettecent...50g&ukey=19783
Sometimes you can cross refer Cadillac parts on our corvettes. Timers, dimmer, power mirror switch and power seats switches were all used in the Cadillacs of the same era.
I think my switch is fine, I just need to find the timer/relay. I may have to trace the wiring to find it. If it needs one it seems like it may be hard to find but if Cadillac used the same one and I can find mine and get the part number...
Rockauto.com is good for cross refer parts and sometimes getting a pic. The timer relay may have a mounting tab in a different spot than the corvette one or something simple like that but everything else will be the same. Good luck
PS check with all the venders first, they usually do this stuff all the time and a poor ground could kick that relay off early. Just thought of that.
Still can't find the timer/relay, but the wiring diagram in the service manual isn't the same as my car. For example the diagram has a light blue wire going to the switch and in my car the switch only has a org/blk, purple, pink, and black. So I've got to figure out why the wiring diagram doesn't match my car.
Ok I get it now, the service manual has 2 conflicting wiring diagrams. One has a switch and a timer relay, presumably left over from earlier cars. The other, and the one that my car has is a solid state timer built into the switch assembly. So I need a new switch.
