Do you have shims between the frame and the arms ? If so, it is the cotter pins that hold them in. If not, and there is play moving the arm in and out, then that is why the shims fell out. This cotter pin holds the shims in. :smash:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Gary means the cotter pin that keeps
the castle nut from spinning off.
Anything keeping you from putting a couple in ?? I would, but most
trailing arm bolts would require a cutting torch to get out. So, I wouldn't
worry about your rear wheels dropping off anytime soon - unless the
bolts look to be new.
As shown here ?? : http://store6.yimg.com/I/zipproducts_1689_17340468
There should be a cotter pin on the slotted nut for the trailing arm bolt and a long 6" cotter pin through the frame to hold the trailing arm shims in place. There should also be a cotter pin in the rear spring end bolts(if stock).

BINGO...exactly...everything seems normal including the shims etc...
just no cotter pin thru the castle nut...
That is definitely not kosher. Get it fixed right away.
ok...i did it...
one side was tightened on so far that the castle didnt interfier at all with the cotter pin...
the pass side needed to be tightened about 2 full turns!
i wonder if that was loose enough to cause any handling problems???
