Default Engine build questions

Okay gonna do this backwards for fun.I have this Howards hyd roller cam
224/230 @.050
.500/.510 lift
112 ls

I have a reman 350 hyd roller shortblock and Trick Flow 195's that flow;

0.100" 64 56
0.200" 138 105
0.300" 198 146
0.400" 237 171
0.500" 257 186
0.600" 258 196

It will be run with a dual plane(likely rpm)intake and a 750cfm carb.

What compression would you shoot for and what power/tq estimates would you guess? What rpm for peak hp?

It will have 1 5/8 headers and a full 2.5 exhaust.Auto car with no more than a good 11" converter around 2400 stall.

Nice mild street cam with good throttle response. I would run no higher than 9.5 to 1 with that cam and todays "regular" fuel and thats tops!
The cam is good to about 5500 rpm but run roller rockers, hardend pushrods and double roller chain.
I think your carb is to big for this setup, 650 would be about right.
The duel plane is right on. Use an HEI Ignition.
The heads are real good for street and a little track use but exhaust flow is a must and you have that covered.
2400 stall is good to burn the tires when needed
You didn't say what gears so I recommend around 3.55.
All this will make you around 350 to 360hp and about 400 lbs ft of torque!!!

I would use the ZZ430 ( GM crate engine ) as a base line spec .. That motor with fast burn heads 9.7 to 1 and a LT4 Hot cam with 1.6 rockers 218/228, Lift .525/.525, makes 430hp / 430tq and is super street friendly ..

I often wonder why people use anything but that cam for a very stout 350 ...

I just recently rebuilt my OEM L-82 4 Speed 3.70 gears into a 355 bored .030 over and with new JE forged Racing Pistons/Rings-9:1 with AFR 180 64 CC aluminum heads. I used the Howards Roller cam similar to your selection with more lift and less duration-.525/.525, duration 219/225, LSA 110-very close to the ZZ430 cam mentioned by diehard. Total compression is 10.2:1 and the engine easily runs on 89 octane with zero detonation. The cam operating range is 1,500-5,600 RPM and I use comp cams roller tipped 1.52 rockers. I would categorize the cam and heads with my compression as moderate street build versus the L-82 cam .450/.460 (much more lift with the new cam), duratiion 222, LSA114 and 882 iron heads. I selected my cam since I was looking for strong mid range with deccent bottom end and high RPM power limited to 6,000 RPM. My engine has tremendous midrange and pulls hard to 6K with no noticeable loss in power. The majority of the time my engine operates in the 2,500-4,500 RPM range and thus my selection. I have no doubt that my 355 L-82 can play with a ZZ430 as well as 383's....

The fly in the ointment is this is an ATK reman longblock for a 90 Z.28 350 TPI motor. The stock heads and replacement cam will be sold or used for a door stop.
The cam is new and can be had for $200.

I am on a budget theme here. The longblock was bought for far less than I can build the hyd roller cam 383 I want.I already have the heads and many carbs to choose from.A used sbc intake is cheap enough.

I don't plan on spinning it to the moon as I don't know the expected reliability of the shortblock.

The car is light so it doesn't have to make BIG hp to be fun.

Gears will be in the 3.23/3.42 range and the tires will be no more than 26" in height save for drag radials in the 27" height should it ever actually run and make it to the strip.

I can sell the longblock for a profit and wait for the build I want if need be.However it would allow me to get the car driveable a lot sooner if I use it.

If the trick flow heads are aluminum, you can go close to 11-1 with 93 octane gas. Cast iron, I would shoot for a little over 10-1

If you maintain good quench you can go 10.2 or so on regular, 10.6 on premium. With 10.5 to 1 in a 355 I would guess.
Peak HP 400 @ 5300
Peak torque 430 @3800
