1981 Headers, Emissions System Delete.
Engine is original to the car (190 hp - 4 speed)
Mild cam\lifters installed
Timing increased
So Question is: The Computer controlled Carb. and Distributor, is it worth getting rid of it? or Tuned for better performance?
Looking for a better sound (headers & exhaust) HP doesn't have to be too much of an increase.
How much power can the computer get from a tune?
What is the cost of getting rid of the computer system all together?
Headers and exhaust will give a GREAT increase for that motor.
I wouldn't get rid of the computer system myself, but if you really wanted to, you'd need a distributor and carburetor. $400 is around where I'd guess the low side is, but the sky's the limit from there.
Just make sure you put an o2 sensor bung in your new exhaust and you'll be fine.
There's no tune for these computers, it only controls the spark advance and the fuel trim at idle. The rest is controlled by the carb to old fashion way. So if you want to "tune" the carb you would do it like any other carb.
One thing you can do is set your initial timing to 14-16 degrees from the stock 6 degrees.
