WAG, It sounds like secondaries are not opening up.
Could you give us some more details?
Is it stuttering, cutting out completely then restarting, hitching back and forth? More details will get a better answer.

your mechanic doesnt know how to test fuel pump pressure?
is the carburetor a Quadrajet and your mechanic is unfamilar with how they work?
if you have no valve noise, why would your mechanic say camshaft?
did your mechanic check the dwell angle and timing?
can you try a different mechanic?

Hmm, maybe an ignition problem? It's really hard to say. Start by checking plugs, wires, ignition timing and verifying that spark is taking place at the plug. A timing light works good for that if you have one.
Also verify that fuel is getting to the carb in suffecient quantity. Fuel pressure gauge or run it with carb full and line off while observing fuel flow into a container.
I'm not sure of your mechanical aptitude. Since you are using a mechanic I'm guessing not too much experience?
