Default ZZ4 questions

Greets all,

After reading all the different posts on the ZZ4 transplant, I am seriously considering it for my 79 L82 4spd. Vette. I am having a hard time finding specifics on this engine though. I have just installed Hooker side exit headers and pipes on my machine, I know they will not fit angle plug heads, are the ZZ4 aluminium heads straight or angled? I remember reading the small waterpump issues (mods from stock pumps). But, will I need a different flywheel?
Any input would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, my 4-speed required a new flywheel. :yesnod:
You'll need plug wires, but won't need plugs. :nono:
You'll need a carb & fuel pump http://www.paceparts.com should hook you up with some info on all crate engines ;)

I just ran out and looked at the sparkplugs on my ZZ4 and they appear to be angled.

The plugs on the ZZ4 are angled. I actually retained my Dynomax headers without any problems. For a manual you will need a different flywheel. I went with an 11 inch clutch and a 14 inch flywheel #10105832 from GM. The water pump on the ZZ4 is long so swapping to a short is required. With this you will have to grind down a bolt on the timing chain cover or replace the cover to fit the pump. I really like the stewart stage 2 pump I put on.

Somewhere around here there was a discussion the other day and people were saying that their Hookers fit fine with the angled plug heads. You might have to do some searching to find the post.
Keep the pipes.

Edit: I found it about 4 pages back.

This site should cover you for finding out details on the engine. This is the main ZZ4 page https://www.spoperformanceparts.com/store/catalog/Product.jhtml?PRODID=1103&CATID=1099

It gives part numbers for all of the components. You can find them individually there and get the specific details if you desire.

There are plenty of guys here with them installed in their Vettes for any other questions.

Closest to a step by step for a C3 that I could come up with.

My ZZ4 swap project

Good luck. Get the engine, you'll never regret it.

Your Hookers will fit the ZZ4!!!! A couple of plugs will be tough to change but there is no interference otherwise!!! I've been running Hooker Sidepipes and the ZZ4 for more than 3 years now... No problems... well except the grin I can't get off my face!!! :D

My headers part numbers are "HOK-2224-1" They are side exit ceramic coated. I was taking a close look at them, it's not too bad changing plugs (I use Accel short plugs). Compareing how they would woek with angle plug heads, it might be a tight fit on the inside plugs. Oh well :cry
