Anyone have plans / dimensions for boxing up a bare small block? I think if I design it from scratch I'll either forget something and make it too big / too small, or over-engineer it.
I'm hoping for a complete M/L in dimensional lumber and ply. Any help?
I built this engine crate last summer to ship a entire engine oil pan to valve covers.
It started off as a basic pallet which I cut down to a dimension of 24" x 32" then I built the metal frame to mount the engine. This might be overkill for what your looking for but if you need to know something specific let me know. It wouldn't be too much trouble to dig it out and measure something for you.
With the cover it's 27" high from ground to top.
Total cost to build it was like $15 and a days worth of work. $15 was just for the plywood to make the cover. The rest of it was just scrap steel and lumber I had laying around.
Neat, thanks. I'll look at all of the links to see if I can adapt it, but it is overkill. I'm just holding onto a bare block, so need something on the order of 22" x 17.5" X 10.5" (inside dimensions).
Planning to just lay the block upside down with the bearing caps alongside wherever they fit. My idea, since I'm not using a metal mount / frame, is to build it with the ply inside of the wood framing.
We use to toe nail 2x4 length wise on a small pallet about 10inches apart. The mains would sit between the boards and then metal strap the whole thing to the pallet. You can also use cheap ratchet straps but you'll need a piece of carpet or something heavy over the edges of the top deck of the cylinder banks so it doesn't cut thru. I lost a ford 460 off the forklift and that set up held together as it tumbled down the driveway. Just had a bent pushrod.
Spray down the bearing/cap mating surfaces, decks, bores or anything you don't want to have to machine a lot with fogging oil or grease it down, put it inside one of those thick large trash bags. Like 3m 42gal I think, seen them at Meijer's/home depot. Had a 400 block go bad on me sitting in my polebarn, because I didn't know better waaay back then.
You can buy specific engine storage bags from Speedway or maybe Summit, they're just the right size and heavy mil. Cosmoline is made for metal storage and will spray on like wax.

With out reading through the entire post, I grease the cylinders, lifter bores, left the cam and main bearings in. Put it in the shed. A little surface rust hot hurt the rest of the block and will come off with a hot tank session.
Stand it on it's nose and bolt a pair of 2x6's across the flange. Flip it over and finish the box as much as you like. No need for a stand to hold it. I do it this way to ship 4 per crate to England. Never had an incident.

Yah those are great for a complete engine, but maybe overkill for just a block and it could be a better deal to buy a box of bags to use on other stuff.
