There really is no s/n designation of late and early in 79.

Original 1st design upper radiator hose is part #371443 AU
& late 79 (2nd design) is # 14016075 UJ.

On one web catalog the late 79 has this note: : "the First design 1979 uses 1 1/2" ID hose; Second design uses 1 1/4" ID hose."

So it sounds like you need to measure and see what ID hose will work.

The hose you need, is determined by measuring the ID.

I suspect that the 1 1/2" ID is the more common 79 upper hose. There were a number of changes made at the very end of 79 production. Changes intended for the 1980 Corvette, such as the 85 MPH and 2 door rear storage compartment, were pulled forward into the end of 79 production. This was done around June or July of 79, for the last month or so of production. It's very possible that the change to the smaller inlet radiator, was done around the same time as the other changes?

If you have a three doors on your storage compartment, it's a early '79. If you have two doors in your storage compartment, it's a late '79.

OP, the easiest way, if you are going to buy local is to buy one of each and return the one you don't use.

The 8 in the vin designates you have a L48. This link provides the vin breakdown:
