Why wouldn't I need 6x9's? (I'm not an audio expert). Right now the only speakers are the 4x6's(?) in the front dash. There is nothing in the rear.
Basically 6x9s are made to provide decent bass in a system without subs, which you will have, so the benefit of the larger speakers will be nill. Nothing wrong with using them, but you may be able to get some nicer, say 5 or 6 inch component systems for the price. May also help on reducing install room so you will have room for those t-tops.

Armstrong...that's the exact same deck I was looking at buying. It was a great price too.

It's so cool, I kind of thought it might break easy though. Have you had any problems with it?

I didn't get any work done at a shop. Everything was ordered in through local suppliers then I had my dads friend who is a mechanic do all the work. He stripped and rebuilt basically the whole front end of the car in his garage. He did an amazing job, took about 5 days and have charged me virtually nothing. I'm very happy wiht th eway it turned out :yesnod:

Armnstrongs deck is cool because it looks like nothing (see pic). Then you click the black panel on the side and the bottom flips open and the rest lights up. It's so neat. ;)

Here it goes. I'm going to try to explain how to make them and how i did the bracket work. I'll explain it using the driver side rear speaker. The passenger is exactly the same just flipped over. First take off the stock speaker and grill by taking off the 3 mounting screws. Behind you will see two metal brackets attached to a black piece of plactic which holds the speaker grill in place. Now undo those metal brakets and black plastic piece. I believe there are two screws on the big metal bracket and one on the smaller one. Now drill out the rivets that are holding the two metal pieces to the black plastic piece. You can throw this piece out. with your template in place already fitted so it fits snug (make sure there is a hole where the speaker will go first so you can see inside or else it will be impossible to do this. Like the picture below

Now you have your two metal brackets ready to be fitted. They will go where the arrows are in the picture. Here is the tricky part. Now depending on how thick of a wood you use you will have to make a new bend in the bigger piece of metal bracket because the top piece will sit lower because its a thicker wood then the stock piece of plactic. So stick your hand in there and line the big metal bracket up with the original holes and make a new bend, which will be at a lower location then the stock bend. As for the other smaller bracket, you just need to drill a hole higher then the stock one. So once the brackets are all fitted it sould look like this, but made out of wood about ready to be carpeted.

If your this far now you have to apolster it, then just bolt the brackets on to the box you have made and then bolt it into the car.

Hope this helps out. It sounds right to me but i probably confused the heck out of you guys. Don't be afraid to ask questions :)

Its nice to have someone you know that can do that type of work on the motor - My friend helps me with some of the projects that I dont have experience on, but it is also a learning process to. I find that once I have done a project on the car, if I need to go back and do it again its alot faster and easier the second time around.

SicChild Ive had the deck for about 4 mnths now and had not one problem from it. It did seem kind of flimsy to me too and I was a little worried at first but not anymore. Works great. The only thing that I might recommend would be an MP3 player if you have access to copy those to disk. If I had it to do over thats probably what I would do but I'm not gonna tackle this again for awile cause it is a PIA and I have other PIA projects going on right now. Get it if you want it. it works great.

Yeah, I just thought that deck was so cool when I first saw it. I want everything that attracts my attention. ;) An MP3 player would be good. It will be a little while before I get a system in anyway. I gotta save up, might as well do it good the first time. =)

Nice. I am in the process of building a sub box for my 69. I also was thinking of covering mine in vinyl. Any tips? Did you pad it underneath, or just cover right over the box?

Putting padding underneat the viynal is unnecessary. I used carpet glue on one with staple gun nails on the back side and it got pretty messy so i just did the second one with only staplegun nails and it turned out the same if not better then the one that i used the glue on

Justin 79-
I just bought the same CD player for my 82. Im also using your template idea-thanks a million for posting that !!!!

Did you see what tool the installer used to cut the plastic openings for your CD player. I think a dremel or roto-zip my be the way to go.

Just wondering if you have seen how this was done-like do the console get removed or ? I just getting ready to do mine in the next few days- after the speaker box set job.

MN Brent - He took the gauge console out completely to do it. It actually comes out pretty easy. I did it myself when i had to fix some wiring problems and got it out within 20 minutes. There are 4 screws that come out on the outside of the console and you have to take out screws where the shifter consol meets the gauge console. There are three in that spot. Then it pulls out. There should be two wiring harnesses going into the back of it. Just remove those and out it comes. The guy who installed it cut the hole for the cd player with a really small hand saw. After seeing how he did it i wish i could have done it myself. It looked really easy.
