Default moving harmonic balancer..

does turning the harmonic balancer by hand throw off the timing or anything? I need to pull it off and put a socket on the big nut inside so I could screw in my puller and moved it.....

The hub is keyed so it should stay in the same position. If the outer ring moved and the inner ring didn't you need to replace the balancer.

I could actually hear the pistons pushing air thru them...

If you put a socket on the big nut in the balancer yes it will turn the engine over but everything moves so no it will not mess with timing. Everything including the distributor moves.

I'm not sure what you're implying, but it's normal for air to leak past the rings when you manually crank the engine over. You will be able to hear the leakdown as the compression bleeds off - that's normal, and it has nothing to do with the balancer.
