Default Fiber optic question:

I have a '70 vert that the front fiber optics didn't work when I bought the car. I am currently in the throes of a "while I'm here", took the console apart for an HVAC issue and want to repair the fiber optics.

Started on the left side, and quickly found that the headlight and high beam suffered from overspray/gunk not allowing light from the bulb back to the console. Cleaned them out, and both are shining brightly.

Went to address the left turn signal, and it appears that the fiber optic is not part of the connector to the bulb like it is on the headlights. There is an orange plastic empty connector on top of the housing, is that the connection for the turn signal fiber optic? If so, what parts do I need to re-connect that to the console?

Sorry if this has been answered a hundred times, but I searched for a while and couldn't find an answer.

Once you have everything working I find that the 68-71 gauges and fiber optics some of the nicest ever done by GM. It is quite a sight at night when all is working correctly.

I'll second this. My 68 factory front fiber optics were cut due to front end collision damage. They have since been replaced with repro fiber optics. The repro optics are fine, but they don't have quite the brightness of the original factory fiber optics because, I think, they don't have quite the same number of strands.
.......There was a period of time after I bought my 68, due to collision damage, the front end left side fiber optics didn't work...not for head lights on or head lights on bright. Just annoyed me. So I rigged up some tiny light bulbs and mated them to the fiber optics with plastic tubing. When my head lights were on, or when the brights were on, the respective little light bulbs lit up and the fiber optic lights on my shifter console lit up appropriately!!!!!

I think that the fiber optics look badass and are a great talking point on night drives. Plus they have come in use when I've had bulbs fail whilst out driving.

That's about what I pictured, thanks! One question though, how does it get through the firewall to the console?

Hi PK,
The forward fiber fiber optics bundle is part of the forward lighting harness as it comes back to the firewall.
Just before the junction block the bundle separates from the harness and passes through the firewall through a grommet just below and toward the outside of junction box.
It then continues on it's own to the console.
In the interior the bundle is held to the underside of the upper dash pad with 2 clips and 1 fastener.
The fiber optics bundle is wrapped in the same material as the car's harnesses.
Regards,
Alan

Excellent description, thanks!

I will start by looking for the bundle at the firewall to see if I can find the old fiber.
