Greetings! I just thought I would do a sympathy-grab post to try help this gut wrenching sick feeling I have.
You see, there I was.... I have been having Power Piston probs and I decided I would get up early this morning and tear into the old Quadrajet. Well, when I was just finishing up (runs good!!!) I hear this CRASH!!!!
Well, I had my shop fan up on top of a cabinet and it chose this opportunity to jump off on to my workbench and then flip (triple Lyndy ?) on to the front right side of my original (complete survivor) 73. Yes, paint to the plastic. Sigh.... I just walked outside and watched my kids play. I will look at it later. Now as you can see it might not look too bad, but this is the worst my car has ever had... And with a show on the 31st...
You say it is original. Does that mean it still has the original Lacquer paint?
If so, then the repair will be quite easy, if you can get some Lacquer.
I still have the original Lacquer paint and have suffered some dings over the past 32 years. All have been repaired with no evidence visable.
Lacquer is very forgiving and easy to do spot repairs.
Yes, origional paint... I do hope you are right and it will be an easy fix. I have seen to many touch up jobs that do not match (paint = fade), are not level, and look bad.
I am going to have my paint zapped on Tuesday to see if they can match the fade over time with Lacquer paint and then who knows...
I had another thought to ease your pain. Sometimes the best therapy is to help others. Like someone who doesn't know carbs but pulled off the top of a 81 q-jet and found a metal cylinder 1/8" diam and 3/4" long....and doesn't know where it goes? You sound carb-savvy. Thanx

Re: Sigh... Bad day!!! Poor Vette! (tiresmokin75-427)
Another inch or so and it could be that you would need to replace the front bumper. So it was bad luck that the fan fell but good luck that it didn`t bust the bumper. Just trying to make you feel a little better.

Owwwee Yeoweee! Trust me, I feel your pain! I did something similar when I was getting ready for a show...I must have spent what seemed like a friggin lifetime detailing this car, and I was tired to the point where my hands were starting to shake. To make a long story short, I was touching up some minor chips and left the can of touch up paint on the driveway, and you guessed it...I kicked the whole damn can of paint all over the carpeted section of the driver's side door! I ran around the driveway like a lunatic screaming, "Oh MY GOD!" The neighbors though I lost it!
Got my mind back and ran in the house and got some acetone and thank God it didn't munch the carpeting up, otherwise, I was looking at a whole new door panel costing $400....believe it or not, it all came out!
Thanks guys for all the nice words!!! I'm going to go Monday and have my paint matched and then use one of those mini-paint guns (hobby types use them) to touch up that area and then try to blend... we will see...
Stevo - "...pulled off the top of a 81 q-jet and found a metal cylinder 1/8" diam and 3/4" long...." Well, not knowing the particular carb you have, it is kind of hard to guess... Could be a few things... 1) sensor actuator plunger (a little bigger than your specs), 2) An older float hinge pin (some were strait) 3) pump lever pin (prob to small). With out seeing it makes it hard. These are just guesses... Good luck!
Thanks for the reply. I found where it belongs by looking UP into the top. I don't know the names of things in there yet, but it is a pin to push down on a small, angled pump...will go get the Roe book...thanx Stevo

I know the feeling of hearing that noise, and then looking for the damage. I dropped a wrench on mine and was lucky that it landed right on the nose emblem. Very little damage, but the feeling of watching the wrench head for the paint made me want to :U afterwards.
