Half-shaft U/J Fitting - Grease?
Hi
I have never read anything to suggest it, but I wondered if anyone ever ads a smear of grease to U/J cups before they press them into the shafts or flange?
I ask because the U/Js I am removing are “blued”, but the new ones are untreated and I was concerned about possible rust! So I was wondering about copper grease??

Are they "blued" from getting hot?
Don't waste your time with the grease. It'll get wiped clean when pressed into the yoke.

I'm using U/Js with grease zerks. (yes I know, I'll wait for all the reasons why these are bad) There is some grease in the cups, but I will be adding grease when they are installed. But it seems like greasing the outside of the cups is a "no-no" then.
In reality, our car is more about "cruising" than rubber burning, so I have no worries about the strength, or lack of, of the greasable U/Js.
Shouldn't one be careful about mixing different grease types?
The grease I use is made for use in universal joints. And not that I will EVER use them...but if a universal joint has a grease fitting...and it is being re-greased....just like tie-rod ends and ball joints...as long as the grease is approved for those applications....it really does not matter if you 'blend' them.

YES there is grease in the caps...but you do as many universal joints as I have ...you will learn to apply a thin layer to keep the pins aligned and stay put. Because that super transparent layer that you can see when you remove the cap is not enough and a pin can fall down and then you are screwed. I have been there so many times...that I do what I have mentioned.
A person can use whatever method they feel works for them the best. I am not here to judge...I am passing along what I do.
I will write that I use solid SPICER universal joints. NO grease fittings.
