Differential question

Default Differential question

1971 small block coupe.Pulled Trailing arms off for rebuild .Side yokes on differential move in and out between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch.Is this a problem I need to address?

Default That's not good!

The end of the yoke inside the differential is held on by a "C" clip.
If the yoke wears down the clip can come off, so yes this is something you should address (sooner than later).

Can you measure with a dial indicator. Mine after replacing with a new yoke measured. .003 and .005 the other side. .005 is a OEM GM unit from 1990

so at 1/16 = .0625" may not be ready to replace, for a daily driver 1/16" is not that bad. @ 1/8 Its worth looking at. The bigger problem you will have is finding a good yoke as a replacement.

As the clutch packs wear, the clearance increases. So you have the a combination of clutch wear and wear on the tips of the stub axles.
