Hello Riverracer. I have never been able to find factory installation dimensions in the AIM, however, UPC 8 shows several drawings that give you an idea of how the tips should be positioned.
Factory installation was simple due to the key and slot arrangement that helped the line worker to locate tips in the proper orientation and depth, since the slot in the tip nested in the trapezoidal key which was welded to the tail pipe. Reproduction exhaust systems don't give us this luxury.
I cannot say with 100% certainty that my exhaust tips are installed to the proper depth, however, I have had the car NCRS flight judged numerous times with no deducts or comments on their location. I've attached a few photos for reference. I cannot get to the car today, as it's put up in storage for another couple weeks yet. I hope this helps. If you need for me to measure when I take the car out of its winter cocoon, just let me know.
So looking at the photos, there about 1/2" - 5/8" sticking out?
Mine were welded on, but crooked.
And since I've put the new trans in and had to re-route the pipes around it, even more so now at the back end.
That gives me something to go by.
Thanks
I can't testify to the correctness of mine either, but it was judged a few years ago and won some awards (before it was mine). This is the only 2 pictures of the rear I have right now, but zoom in and it looks like redrdster72's to me, maybe out a little farther.
From memory, I'd say more like 3/4" to 1", if measuring straight out from the bezel trim to the top of the tip, following the same plane as the top edge of the tip.
If I put a straight edge on the trim in the bezel, the end of the tip sticks back about 1 3/4". It changes greatly depending on how you measure. If you tell me how you're measuring, I'll try the same.
