I took mine off and will rely on my cell phone if something were to ever happen, may be dumb to some, but I never drive far enough to not be able to call someone to rescue me.
I removed the spare tire and carrier from my 79 to ease the replacement of my rear spring. I wouldn't trust the spare anyway since it is 36 years old. I have been contemplating re-installing it as compartment for storing something if space becomes an issue. I would be interested to see if any members have come up with a creative use of it.

That's awesome. I was just starting to visualize building a cover panel to fill in the empty well and prevent it from being a pressurized wind pool at speed. However, I'll keep the mufflers exposed, and this step is way out at the end of my to do list.
