Default Borgeson Install Questions

I'm ready to install the Borgeson kit on my '81 and I have two questions?

The first question is about the mounting bolts. The factory gear box bolts are fine threaded carriage bolts and the underside of the bolts fit into a square in the frame. The bolts supplied with the kit are simply hex head coarse threaded bolts. I am thinking that the factory bolts should be better at mounting the box because of design of the bolts. Is there any reason why I shouldn't reuse the factory bolts?

The second question involves the collapsing of the column shaft. There is a white plastic collar retained by a wire clip located at the end of the column. Do I have to remove this clip or white collar prior to collapsing the column shaft?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I can't help with the plastic collar, but I used the factory carriage bolts because you could slide them into the square holes and tighten the nuts without having to get a wrench on the back side to hold the bolts included with the kit. It made it much easier with just two hands holding everything.
Post a picture of the collar you are asking about. My 72 didn't have one.

I found a picture of the collar on the internet. My column does not have the metal clip and screw on the shaft that is in the picture though.

That's a bearing adaptor, the inner part of the shaft should collapse without removing that. Maybe someone who actually has done it will comment.

That collar doesn't have to be removed, but you may need to clean up the shaft so it will slide through it easier.

I marked the column shaft at 2.5" and it easily drove in without removing the bearing adapter. Ready to finish the box and coupling install in the morning. I'll be using the factory carriage bolts with some new nylon insert locknuts. Thanks for your responses.

Got the Borgeson box installed. Now my steering wheel moves up and down as if the top bearing is worn. It moved slightly before the install. Now it is more pronounced. Your thoughts please.

Loosen the lower mounting bolts for the column (where it mounts to the firewall). Turn the steering wheel and see if it gets better. I'm thinking your lower and/or upper bearings are worn and the new box and column are not perfectly aligned.

Thanks zwede. I'll check it out this afternoon.
