I realize I'm probably dealing with a short somewhere butI'm just hoping someone has had a similar issue so I won't be chasing gremlinsfor a week. Anyway, I just bought a rebuilt motor from Norm Werner Vette's,hooked it up and nothing worked. After 30 minutes of trying to figure it out, Ifumbled around under the dash and just happened to touch the wiper door solenoidand it was warm to the touch. I then grabbed the wiper motor and it was hot tothe touch. Also, the wiper door over ride light will not cut off unless theharness is unplugged at the motor and I tripled checked to make sure the switchbelow the steering wheel was not in override position. Any ideas?
I don't know about the getting hot part, but the motor won't work unless the w/w switch is grounded. The switch applies ground to one wire for fast speed and two wires for slow speed. Mine did not work until I grounded the plate that the switch mounts to in the center dash. If you are trying to operate the motor out of the car, you will still need to ground the band on the wiper switch to the ground on the motor.
All those "safety switches/solenoids" can make it a real headache. The '68 wiper motor works differently than all others---it has a constant hot wire going to it and it runs only when the dash switch grounds the system/weird!....the hot relay and motor don't sound good....I had to buy a Color Wiring Diagram to chase down the 4 hour problem with my wiper motor (even with the wiper door and related switches/overides eliminated by the previous owner).
Original owner 1968 with original factory installed wiper system. If I accidently turn on the wiper switch and then immediately turn it off as in just cleaning/wiping the top dash of dust, my original owner 1968 must be started and the wipers started and then turned off. Something about the way the system was built that requires this function not to pull electrical power through the system with an accidental turn on and turn off with the key in off position. This procedure is not in the owners manual.
