Too many volts
I apparently am suffering from voltage regulator failure, the gauge read well into the red line this morning. Should I disconnect the alternator for the drive home?

No i wouldn't do that.... Assumming your drive isn't two hours at 70mph. Just watch the battery. It will get hot and could explode. It will vent hydrogen so the NO Smoking rule applies, unless you just like to go BOOM!

I would NOT operate the car in that condition. No good can come of it.
Changing out the regulator or even swapping in another alternator is very easy.

Re: Too many volts (Cookwithvette)
I was running a 140amp alternator and a week ago it melted some of my positive wiring and blew out all my light bulbs and radio and battery acid came out of the battery (very uncomfortable smell). I'm just glad nothing caught on fire. Do you have an extinguisher in your car???

Re: Too many volts (kbk212)
I swapped out the voltage regulator last night and ran the car for 5 minutes and looked good to go, gauge steady at 14v. Drive 10 miles to work and GEN lights up. So off to parts store at lunch for a rebuilt unit to swap out tonite. Did I kill it by not charging the battery fully before starting up? And why do I have a GEN light with an alternator? Shouldn't it read ALT? :smash:
