Replaced oil pan plug on stock 81 350. It still drips. :mad Any input on the use of an oversized threaded plug. Auto Zone man said I should try one. I don't know about the risk of enlarging a already leaking plug. Thanks for any input. :seeya
I also use the same gasket that Paul showed a picture of.
It is available at most any GM dealer. I normally keep some
on hand as I change them at almost every oil change.
They work much better than the gaskets available in the
Help sections of the auto parts chains. GM dealers also sell
the bolt that Paul pictured and you may want to also
purchase one if you are using an aftermarket bolt or yours
is old.
Well That's the heck of it. I took it into the Chevy dealer for oil change and asked them to put new drain plug in. This was just recently as the leak was around the old plug too. So I figured while they are there just replace the plug. But it still leaks. But just because they did it I guess they could have left the washer off. I hate to waste oil but will drain pan and check for washer. Thanks for input about the oversize plug. Also, no rudeness was taken on this end sir; Thanks for your input. Much appreciated to all of ya. Terry :seeya
Thanks Mark. That washer ($0.50) is an instant solution for oil leak complaints on older GM engines that I see almost every day. People who change oil tend to discard the washer and go with the naked bolt. That does not work. The newer GM drain bolts have them built-in so many oil change shops never think of them for older cars.
I have just encountered a similar problem on a car I am working on, the original drain plug hole was stripped, I tried an oversized - didn't work. Tried a double oversized - didn't work. Next step is either to install a rubber plug or pull the pan and weld a nut onto it to fix for good (or maybe just get a new pan).
