I have a '71 LS-5 that has a lifter noise. What is the procedure to adjust the lifters. If that doesnt help the noise do you think I should go for a top end rebuild or a total rebuild. Car has 88,000 miles and is in excellent original condition and really dont want to rebuild if not neccessary. It really doesnt burn much oil so I beliieve the engine is good condition.
On hyd lifters you back off until you hear a clacking noise (while running). Then tighten usually 1/2 to 1 turn depending on what the manual says. If the lifters or cam are bad and the rest of the motor is good you could replace just the cam. Take a compression check of each cylinder and if they are all within 10% of each other the motor should still be healthy. Just replace the cam. You will probably have to replace the springs also and you should do the valve seals while the springs are off.
You might want to perform a compression test before making a decision on what to do next. Probably could be due for a top end overhaul, depending on previous maintenance.
To locate a noisy one you would have to run the engine with the covers off. there were two very good ideas (cutaway covers or clips to retain oil). Take a old garden hose and cut off a 3 foot piece and use it like a stethoscope. You should be able to hear the loudest lifter. Go through the adjustment procedure I recommended and add only 1/2 to 1 turn of preload depending on your preferences. If the same lifter is still noisy, replace them all. If you are going that far, might as well do a valve job, as the intake manifold will be off.
