Default 1969 Small Block Alternator

I have a 1969 Corvette small block. I got it from my in laws after it sat for 3 plus years and have been tinkering with it in my very limited spare time, and even more limited car knowledge. While driving it, the alternator started making a grinding clicking noise. I assume that it needs to be replaced. It seems relatively easy to replace, but considering I have no clue what I am doing, I have a few questions.

1. Does the sound described mean the alternator needs to be replaced, or am I missing something simple.
2. I am planning on putting an upgraded stereo in the car, along with LED headlights and taillight and may eventually put in an electric fan, should I get a more robust alternator? What Obstacles would this create for me?
3. Nothing on the car is stock, original or accurate, keeping that in mind, any recommendations on alternators?
Thanks!

Most likely the bearings are going bad.
Upgrading to a higher output alternator is no different than replacing the stock unit. Very simple.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST.

Be mindful the old alternator could be valuable, if original, even in need of rebuild.

Hi rt,
Syl's right about the alternator, (if it's an original), having some value.
People would be interested in it for it's case and the part number and date stamped on it.
They'd also be interested in the original aged finish on the case so don't bother to clean it at this point.
Regards,
Alan

There should be some numbers on the top of the alternator that you my want to post or a picture of it. That would be very helpful .
Thanks

Agree with all of the above, plus it is not that hard to rebuilt it. Kits are available everywhere that contain all the pieces you need.

Thanks everyone. I'll take a picture of it and post it along with any numbers I can see later tonight. Being original isn't what I am going for, but if I could sell it and offset the cost of a new one that would be great, but I have my doubts.

Any recommendations on new alternators? Brand, voltage?

This is what I am looking at.

Again, thanks for all of the help.

I recently purchased a CS130 through ebay.

Had it on a test bench and put out ca. 110 amps at 1500 rpm.

It's a Chinese knockoff apparently. Still have to see how long it's going to keep up. On the bench it was working correctly.

The shop said to upgrade the charge wire to the starter to 10 mm². Big cable but a necessity.

Here are the photos of the existing alternator. I assume that it isn't worth anything, but let me know.

Doesn't look like an original factory installed '69 small block alternator. It looks like a rebuild from a parts store.
