Chuck, was the used car market hot for the older ones? I could imagine if this were to happen today that the C5 Z06's and even base models would command a premium if something similar were to happen. On a related note, since you were around during that period, why weren't there more L88s ordered? How could they have been so secretive for 3 years? It seems that somehow people would have found out about this "super corvette" during that time and really sold a bunch of them. I know that they were much more expensive, but, it still seems that more would have been sold. If GM came out with a 550hp car for 100K today, with no a/c, no radio, no anything, I would be willing to bet that they would sell more than all of the L88s combined from 67-69. Was it really that secretive or just really that expensive? Even the ZR1 were selling around 500 a year in the last several years of production and weren't they about 2x as much as a regular one? Just wondering.

Not only was gas scarce, but polution contol legislation made the car manufactures job much, much more difficult. High performance by car compaies was absolutely put on a back burner. Many would like to see this happen again. Important Federal highway $$ were withheld from states that weren't zeleaous about enforcing it. Most performance cars had already been driven hard and looked the part. A 435hp Vette was more than contemporary tire technology could handle up to 100mph anyway, and you could still get a stereo.
No one would ever have imagined that somebody could tell you you couldn't work on your own car and modify any part of it within reasonable safety limits. The factory gave you a very good starting point, but cams, headers and 4 barrel Holleys were cheap, under $50. This was the exent of most backyard engine mods. Aftermarket intake manifold companies really didn't start taking hold until the early 70's as I remember it. The factory HP pieces were generally considered pretty good. No one gave a flip for original number cars. The NCRS stuff was just really getting underway.
I had pretty much given up even thinking that 300 horsepower in a new Corvette would ever happen again. Only around 1990 did I see any real hope. The C5 was the first Vette in almost 30 years that I could really get excited about owning again.
Political pressures and corporate policy could change again. In 1970 many prospective Vette owners were waiting for the 465 hp LS7, a 454 L88. This engine had publicity and was eagerly sought bysome power junkies, but it probably wouldn't have been a real high number option either. The new ZO6 is so much more streetable by comparrison. But it was then thought to be just postponed like the 69 LT1 had been. No one would have thought that the highest power options had already come and gone. I think of this when I hear people waiting for the super C6 ZO6. That ship may never come in!

To previous post (sorry forgot your handle). I to used to hate the 73-79 Vettes because of their nose/ rears and more importantly the low low HP (this when I owned my 1970 L-T1 vert. Now that 350-450 HP crate engines are a dime a dozen buying a under 200 HP stock Vette is not even a worry. To be able to get into a Vette at $6k is hard to turn down and I have plans to pro-street the 77 as soon as my house sells. 210HP to a possible 700 HP (more than that requires too much frame strengthening)all in a "emissions vechicle", I LOVE EXCESS . :cheers: :cheers:
I also never would have guessed in 2003 that Chevy could put out an emission vechicle that dyno'd at 450 HP at the rear wheels. That with A/C and all the bells and whistles. This is a great time to be a hot rodder, either classic or new performance. :cool:

Maurice, I noticed you have 3-4 computers along with 3-4 keyboards, 3-4 monitors, and well let me guess 3-4 mouse (mice?) . Anyhow i recommend getting something called a KVM switch. It allows you to share a monitor,mouse, keyboard with a group of computers. i have a 4 port kvm switch. You can get one for about 60 bucks and it will definately give you some much needed desk space!

I acutally have a KVM switch, but I have a very funky setup with it. I have 5 computers, 3 monitors, 3 mouse, and 2 keyboards. My laptop is on the left hand side of the desk and has its own monitor and keyboard. This is the computer that I do most of my work on. The middle monitor is dedicated to my #1 computer and I do monitoring on it, so not a lot of typing, I can get away with a dedicated mouse and the keyboard is hooked up to the KVM switch. The 3rd monitor (right hand side) is connected to the KVM switch and is the monitor for the other 3 computers. Those are my game and test machines so I don't use them all the time and just the KVM switch for them all the time. I also have removeable hard drives for those computers so I can switch between platforms when needed to test different setups and patches and whatnot. Since I work from home, I need all the screen real estate I can get sometimes and this setup works very well for me. Hope I didn't confuse you with the setup details.
Hehe, Well im glad to hear you have a kvm switch, How about invest in some KDS flat panel 15inchers. I assembled them for my neighbor 3 side by side. Looks too sweet. Add split desktops, xwindows or vnc and youll look like some wall street trader. Of course those guys on wallstreet dont have a shrine of vettes either!
