I would like to upgrade my oil pressure line with AN fittings for my 73 small block. I found one to fit the block, but not the back of the original guage. Has anyone done this? PS had fun cleaning up a nice puddle of oil on my new carpet.
I converted mine to AN-4. The guys at NAPA just let me go back and look through all their fitting draws. Then used a 1/8 NPT coupler between the AN fittiing and the gauge fitting. I'm running a Dry Sump and external oil filter housing and wanted the look of stock gauges...
The fitting in the back of the gauge is a compression fitting- but it's NOT a hardware store compression fitting. If you look carefully at the picture MelWff posted you can see the ferrule is not a round "ball" but it's a tapered cone with a ring. the two are not interchangeable unless you like leaks.
For the record, I'm not a real big fan of using copper for the oil pressure line. Vibration work hardens the copper and it can crack. Been there. It may be that Autometer uses a different alloy copper and it lasts longer.
Hi Tim,
The reason you mention about the possible problem with copper line is, I believe, why at least some original sb cars had black nylon lines.
On cars where there copper line was used wasn't there a 'loop' left in the line to alter the vibration that hardens and then cracks the line?
Regards,
Alan
copper will fatigue and crack from vibration, I highly suggest using 1/8" stainless line.
it will last forever, don't forget to put a loop in the line to minimize vibration.
good luck.
