I have a problem with my transmission. I ran over the tread of a truck yesterday and it hit something under my 77 vette. It put the transmission in first gear and it will not come out. The shifter moves but it feels like something is broken. It is a cable and where would it hook to transmission>

Automatic or manual? Auto trans has a cable connected on the drivers side of the trans. If manual, some of your linkage probably got bent.
Yes get car in the air and check the shift cable/linkage as stated on drivers side.
Got the cable out. Didn't know it made an S turn above the transmission. Now just have to find a new one and get it back in.
Sure had me worried when it slammed into first gear driving down the highway at 60mph.
Put it in park manually on the trans, put the shifter in park, tighten it up. then put shifter in L1 and make sure it matches the detents. shouldn't take much...the detents in the trans are positive for each position. if you've ever hot-wired a car, this is how you would manually put it in gear after twisting the steering wheel to break the cam lock...they never show that on tv...

But the question I have is if it doesn't match up, and it doesn't, how do you adjust the cable? I keep hearing adjust the cable but haven't seen how that is done.
I don't believe there is any adjustment built into the cable. the bracket may be bent, or I have heard some aftermarket cables are not made correctly. Is you'rs a GM part?
There's a little adjustment on the trans shift lever. I usually place it in low1 and do the same with the shifter. That usually gets you very close to perfect. Just make sure your car locks into park when finished.
