It's only a matter of convenience. I find it's easier having the carb on the bench so that the control rods and screws don't get dropped into weird places. Plus my back starts to ache if I lean over the engine for any length of time.

accel. pump replace
Well I went ahead and removed the carb. Good move! Gasket between top and center body was torn to the edge in several places. Base plate was wrong. Hanger for metering rods was bent slightly and several loose screws. Purchased a kit and fixed everything including the accel. pump which was the original task. What a difference it made. Thanks for all the responses.
