Found out tonight that my power steering pump was bad....they wanted $285 to replace it..... :mad
So my questions are:
1.) How hard is it to replace the pump? Everything else is brand new, so it would just be the pump itself.
2.) I think I read somewhere that Chevy/GM used the same pump for a bunch of different vehicles, anyone know which ones?
3.) Any other suggestions? You guys have been very helpful and have had great patience in putting up with me as I begin to learn "cars and vettes" from scratch.

b,
I changed mine a few years back on my 1970 BB. It was one of the more easier parts to change i found. I bought a rebuilt for $100 i believe it was. You may want to replace the hoses on the pump while youre at it. When you pull them off, be sure and cap the ends so no dirt gets inside. After you get your new pump back on, youre supposed to elevate teh front of the car off the ground and turn the steering wheel slowly in each direction until it cant be turned any more. Do this a few times with the engine running.

RR...
Thanks for the info....the hoses are and control valve are less than a month old. The guy I bought it off had them replaced when he put the new brakes on, but left the old pump.
I'm guess I need to take the alternator out and get underit as well.....
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (bsowa)
Definately a good idea to remove the alternator & bracket from the engine to remove the pump, you don't even need to remove the hoses from the pump just from the control valve.

I'm actually selling my PS pump from my '79. I went with a serpentine setup (and corresponding new pump) so I don't need it any more. See my F/S add for more info http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=355386
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (bsowa)
I changed mine on Sunday. I bought the pump without the reservoir from Auto Zone for $44.99. Auto Zone also has a power steering pulley puller in their loaner tool program. A must have.
If you use your old reservoir be sure to install the studs with the short end into the pump. I put mine in backwards, the stud bottoms out before pulling the pump against the seals in the reservoir. :bb When I put fluid in it, it didn't even slow down before it hit the floor. :cry
I will be pulling it out and turning the studs around Saturday. :U
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (Indy Year 25)
Pull the alternator. Pull the lines off the back from below. Then pull the pump and mount as one piece. I had mine rebuilt by a shop here for $75. The Napa rebuild kit is $50 so I figure that it's well worth it and it comes back all shinny and painted.
I have near Zero room from the pulley to the frame so I have to put on the belt before I remount the pump which is loose in the frame.
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (Lt1er)
I just rebuilt mine with a kit... but now I'm wondering what's the best way to get the pulley back on the shaft. Any ideas?
Hmmm. Found it at corvettefaq.com. I'm going to get a grade 8 bolt with matching nut and a big honkin'washer, thread the bolt into the shaft, and crank it on down. It should work just like my crank damper does, without me having to shell out $90 for the ball bearing billet damper puller/installer tool from Summit. :D
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (bsowa)
Not hard at all. As long as the old reservoir isn't rusted through or leaky, I don't see why it couldn't be used. You just have to make sure everything is clean. Use brake cleaner or carb cleaner and you should be fine.
Did the new pump come with the studs and the pressure union? If not and you didn't keep the old ones, you're gonna have to get a set. Hardest thing I found rebuilding mine was that the threads in the pump were slightly galled... apparendly someone used a poer tool to install the pressure union. Don't know if she's gonna leak, but I hope to find out in about a week or so.
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (bsowa)
The seals include one O-ring for each stud, 2 for the pressure union, and one big one to seal the pump to the reservoir. I believe this is it (I'm at work and I don't have the instructions handy). If you bought a new pump you won't need the shaft seal.
Re: Power Steering Pump....How Hard to Replace? (bsowa)
The pump I bought at Auto Zone came with all of the seals. I figured rather than spend about $12 for a seal kit, I would be better off spending $45 for a new (rebuilt I guess) pump that came with the seals and a life time warranty.
The pump also came with a bolt, nut and washer to push the pulley on like zymurgist mentioned. The pulley puller I got as a loaner from Auto Zone could also be used to reinstall the pulley. I installed it most of the way using the nut, bolt and washer but the washer kept sucking down into the ID of the pulley. I ended up using the tool to push it on the last 1/8" or so.
Auto Zone dot com showed the pump with the reservior for about $8 more than the pump without. If the price is that close I would buy it with the reservior. (I didn't because the local AZ didn't stock it with) Then you could just do a simple R&R and it would be painted too. If there is a big price spread it's not tough to take it apart and put it back to gether.
