I'm in the process of replacing the rear compartment door frames as well as the surround frame on the 73. The hinges are riveted to the original frame. Has anyone replaced their surround frame and if so how did you reattach the hinges? Thanks guys, Craig
I'm sure other people have done this BUT........
Unscrew every screw you can see, I think there is 3 in each door and 3 in the end frames. I dont remember any rivets. It is easy to do. I did it and mine look brand new after I sprayed dye on them.
I replaced my surrounds by using very small sheet metal screws. I think they were only 1/4'' long. Put the frame over the door first and drill pilot holes smaller than the diameter of the screw you are using. Worked great!! :flag
I just started this exact same job on my 68 coupe last weekend and am awaiting the rivets and other parts from Dr. Rebuild which were just ordered a day or so ago.
The hinges are held on to the main frame by aluminum rivets with large heads and Dr. Rebuild sells them. You might be able to use very short screws or nuts an dbolts but there isn't much clearance so I went with the rivets. Plus, I am trying to keep everything original.
Dr. rebuild has all the parts on page 142 in the catalog.
It will be interesting to see how I can get these new rivets in place without breaking the new frame. Slow and easy I guess.
