Default 1970 Headlight Housing Mount

I am refurbing the headlight hardware on my 70 and have a question on one of the bolts.

Bolt #13 which threads into the housing (#1) will rotate about 90 degree's clockwise or counterclockwise but binds up in either direction. Is this bolt peened on the end or should it come right out without damaging the housing?? #14 is a bushing.

Is this what your bolt looks like?

Yes... now that I have it removed. You can't see the bolt design until you remove it. I took a chance and muscled it off. The bolt threads are not peened.

The (shoulder) bolt, bushing and arm were rust-welded together.

The arm is supposed to rotate on the bushing.... but the rotation was taking place on the bolt & housing threads. I was debating about taking this apart, but now I'm glad I did. The soft threads in the housing would have eventually stripped.

Hi Tom,
I'm curious if in your work on your headlights you noticed if part #12 (plastic cap) is still in attendance?
The AIM indicates 3 on the left and right sides.
Regards,
Alan

I looked for those on mine, (72 is supposed to have them also) no trace of them ever being there (over spray or anything)

Hi M,
I didn't find any hint of them on my 71 either.
I 'think' they are similar to or are the same as the 'cap' on one of the license light housing screws.
Regards,
Alan

Now that you say that I believe you're correct, I actually think I have those in a drawer somewhere and oddly enough, there were caps on both of the light screws on mine... I guess there's wires along there to be protected, I wonder what the ones on the front were protecting...

I assume you mean #12 4770719 "PLUG"....

No... I checked all 6 screws and none of them are capped.

Hi M,
I'd be curious to know if you can find them in the drawer.
That would mean at least 'some' 72 cars had them.
Regards,
Alan

I really don't think they were on my 71.
When I took the 2 headlight shields off, even if I didn't know they were there, they would have fallen on the floor as the shield screws came out.
They had to be a bit of a hassle to install since it needs to be held in place as the screw is tightened x 6.

It's the plate light I'm pretty sure had them, nothing on the front (but I don't thing I'm the only one who ever in there by the looks of things)
I've got a tub of various stuff that I dump these types of thing into, I'll have a look and see if I can find them

There were 1 1/2 out of the 6 plastic caps on my 69 when I got there.

Alan,
Thanks for finally posting a picture that shows your car is not perfect.
Missing one plastic cap on the license plate light and non factory paint drool.
The horror.
