Motor back in, installed new temp sending unit, wire connected, not getting a reading on the water temp gauge. Sending unit was supposed to be for a 73 Chevy small block. Is it possible the thread sealant is blocking the signal? Could it be an incorrect sending unit? Thanks for any thoughts.
ground the wire connected to the sender, if you still don't get a reading the problem is not the sender. If you do get a reading you are correct about the sealant or have a bad sender.

What is the gauge doing??? Always the first question for me and then watch the video below. Is it possible they sold you a sender for a passenger car? It's happened before! What part number did you purchase and I'll tell you.
As mentioned above, pull the wire off the sender, the gauge should go to cool, ground it and it should peg out.... this will narrow down your search. If the gauge works as shown in the video below, then put a multi-meter on the sender and see what the ohm output is.
Testing a 68-76 Temperature Gauge -or- What your non working gauge can tell you!

Hello and thanks very much for your video. My gauge is reading 100 and not moving as the car warms up. I put in a new wire harness, and have a good connection at the sender. When I get back to the shop, I will look for the insulater washer. I did not disassemble the gauges that far, maybe it rotted out? I do not have the sender # with me, what OHM reading should I get? Again, thanks very much for advice, respectfully, Frank.
I'm still working on the tech side of the site and I should have posted this for you with the other video.. It makes it easier to diagnose. But it is pointing exactly at 100 as shown below that's probably the issue.
But.. before I went there, I would test the dash unit by grounding out the sender wire at the gauge first! If it moves then the issue is somewhere else or the sold you the wrong sender.

Thanks again! I see a slight difference of the needle near the 100 mark. One right at it, one just below. Will check again Tuesday, but I think mine was right at the 100 mark.
perhaps we should save the 3/8" NPT orifice in the AFR heads for the temperature sending unit for the dual fans.one fan switch at 195 degree in one head a the other head at 180 degrees.use the 1/2 NPT hole in the intake manifold for the OEM temp. sending unit.

Captain Bob- I think you may have posted this in the wrong tread.... ?
