what inspection, emissions, safety, something else? What did they do to the car? Was it on a lift? The speedometer uses a cable coming from the transmission, could they have damaged it?
Yea Mel - it was on a lift. I'm in PA and it is a safety inspection. I crawled under it when I got home and didn't see anything hanging. I'll take another look Saturday. Thx for the reply
If your 82 has cruise control there is a transducer under the hood, drivers side in front of and below the brake booster. Check there for loose connection of the cable. You can remove the cable from the transducer and spin it by hand and check the speedo for operation. If the speedo works, the issue is either the lower cable or the transducer.

I'm having this issue as well on my '82, but can't locate where the upper speedo cable or tranducer is (looking at the shop manuals, but I can't physically view it). Any pics of what exactly I'm looking for? Not crazy about driving w/o a speedo! Lower cable appears fine.
My cruise control controls just spin around on the stalk.
Would like the instructions on how to remove the speedometer and install a replacement. Apparently involved dropping the steering wheel to get at whatever holds the speedo in place. Need to replace mine and have the replacement, but it seems quite involved.

Not that involved. I've pulled my speedo many times. Remove the dash cover (don't know the technical name) under the steering column which has 4 screws. Two bolts hold the steering column mount under the dash. Lower the steering column. I put a towel between the steering wheel and the seat to keep the column propped up a little. A few screws to remove instrument housing. The hardest part is reaching behind the speedo to push on the clip that retains the cable to the back of the speedo. In my case I can't pull speedo/tach housing out very far making it a PIA to get to the clip. After you do it once it you get the hang of it.
Got it-I can see that. I'm losing the upper cable going into the dash through the firewall then...
Disconnect the upper cable from the transducer and spin the cable by hand or with a drill while watching the speedo. If the speedo works, the problem is in the transducer or lower cable. If the speedo doesn't work, the issue is in the speedo or the upper cable.
I'll bet it's the lower cable. As the transducer gets old and starts to wear, it gets harder to turn. It will put more and more pressure on the lower cable, until it finally gives out.
On my car, the lower cable went, so I just put it one long cable and bypassed the transducer.
Yep-upper cable spins the needle (although the collar was frozen and there's no space for a wrench between the power booster and the washer fluid reservoir or to get my damned hands in there, so it was a bitch to get it off.
Not a bad idea to use one cable-I'd never use cruise control anyway.
