1981 new distributor

I have a new msd distributer and I was wondering if I could just change it out or do I have to get a new carb as well

it can be changed out, no new carb needed, is your oem HEI giving you problems. the MSD wont give you any perofrmance gains over the stock HEI unit.

No it's brand new and was given to me so I figured it couldn't hurt and it would look nicer

well thats up to you, i have a msd streetfire in my79, only because the oem hei was worn out and previous owner had modified it (not good). so i junked it. havent had any problems with the msd unit.

Do you still have your 81 oem computer controlled qjet carb and distributor?? If so then you cannot use the msd dist unless you switch to a pre computer qjet carb.

I have an '81 as well. If you still have the ccc working in the car, you really cant use it.. The super powerful 'supercomputer' in our cars need to 'talk' to our dizzys. Pretty confident your gifted msd will not have the connections..
