well thats up to you, i have a msd streetfire in my79, only because the oem hei was worn out and previous owner had modified it (not good). so i junked it. havent had any problems with the msd unit.
Do you still have your 81 oem computer controlled qjet carb and distributor?? If so then you cannot use the msd dist unless you switch to a pre computer qjet carb.
I have an '81 as well. If you still have the ccc working in the car, you really cant use it.. The super powerful 'supercomputer' in our cars need to 'talk' to our dizzys. Pretty confident your gifted msd will not have the connections..
You can buy a reman ac delco hei for a 1980 or earlier sbc/bbc for around $70 or use the msd free dist(made in china if a street fire). You can still use your ccc dist coil, rotor and cap if you want.
