What I want to do is just replace the mufflers. The entire dual exhaust is new. I want to take off the horrible gigantic round mufflers and replace them with something low profile with a nice throaty sound. The mufflers themselves in your diagram look perfect. I just need to measure the OD of the pipes I have once I get the mufflers off. Do you sell only the mufflers and if so.. is there a way I can get the dimensions of them so that I can make sure they will bolt on with no modifications?
Absolutely and totally understandable, given that picture.
We have all kinds of universal mufflers with a variety of shapes and dimensions, usually with several pipe diameters offered for a given muffler size/shape. You can see the whole lineup on our website here.
When you click on an individual part number, the product page will have a photo of the exact dimensions shown on it. For example, this is the photo for Part #12246, which is a 5" x 8" oval muffler.
Just like the catbacks, the mufflers come with the same quality lap-joint welded construction and we back them with our lifetime warranty. If there's a particular tip you're looking for to complement it, we also offer exhaust tips made from polished stainless that last much longer than typical chrome and also come with the lifetime warranty. And like the mufflers, we make a huge variety of tips.
Could you please compare the loudness of the stock mufflers sound and the aftermarket? Maybe someone even meassured it in db? I am looking for a slighlty louder (richer) option than stock, otherwise I have to go stock. So far I like magnaflows but you really cannot buy sound over the internet (so they might be actually loud).
Thanks!
The mufflers that are on my car are very large round mufflers. They are most certainly Corvette mufflers. I have seen many pictures of stock vettes with the same ones on. Yuck. Anyway... the inlet on them is long and curved up to meet the intermediate pipes. The end of them have the built in long downturned tailpipe. To me.. they look like a very large round version of these...

You're absolutely correct. I suppose most folks have swapped them out over the years. I've never seen them on a Vette before and I've been around a ton of them. In any case, I stand corrected and have learned something in the process.

Answer: Our mufflers will provide a deep, throaty but smooth tone at all RPM's. At idle and cruise speeds it will not be much louder than stock in most cases. But step on it, and it will become more aggressively toned, while not becoming overbearing and keeping the passenger compartment drone to a minimum.
You're right, though, that you can't really gauge volume or even the nuance of sound via Internet video and audio clips. That said, here's a short audiovisual clip of a C3 exhaust:

I am looking at the Magnaflow 323066 which is a 1pc hideaway muffler that could possibly bolt right on although I will probably have to cut my existing exhaust because the inlet pipe on my old round mufflers isn't nearly as long as the Magnaflows. I am also thinking about a set of Flowmaster 40's and just build my own pipe to connect to my existing exhaust and add chrome turned down tailpipes to them.
This is what the #323066 hideaway looks like from the side however I purchased the complete true dual exhaust system kit from CC for my 78 L82 so the pipes they provided matched up to the mufflers. The problem for you will be getting the mufflers onto your pipes.:
I cut the tips and added some short chrome extension & do like the hideaway feature:
Yea, I have been everywhere looking for exhaust pipes to attach my existing pipes to Flowmaster 40's with no luck. The exhaust elbows are available in 45 and 90 degree. The ones I need are about 60 degree. Its weird... the mufflers on my car are stock vette round mufflers with stock inlets but the inlets are at a 60 degree bend so they line up perfectly with the pipes coming from the motor. Every other Corvette specific pipe has the inlets at 90 degree from what I could see. I am thinking it might be a better idea to just buy a complete system from the manifolds to the mufflers.
I was also thinking about putting on side pipes because I love the way they look. A set of black side pipes would look great on a yellow car. I don't want to put headers on the motor and I am not sure if its possible to do side pipes without headers.

I am still having no luck finding mufflers. My car has what appears to me to be a complete dual exhaust system with the 2 large round mufflers that stick out the bottom and the sides. These are referred to as the factory stock mufflers for 1977. In 78 Chevy switched to a smaller oval low profile (hideaway) type system. I wanted to just remove my stock mufflers and replace them with a set of Magnaflows or Flowmaster 40's but the problem is I can't find exhaust elbows that have the correct angle to line up with my existing intermediate pipes which are at around a 60 degree angle. I would need those small pipes to be custom made and I can't get my car to an exhaust shop because its unregistered, not insured and it has no mufflers on it so there is nothing to hold up the intermediate pipes. I then started looking at mufflers like the ones in the picture above. If you look the inlet pipe it looks like its around a 60 degree angle. It certainly isn't 45 or 90. To my eyes... those mufflers look like they would be a direct bolt on to my existing exhaust system.
I need to get complete dimensions of the above mufflers but so far no luck.

Go to a competent muffler shop & have them install them! They can bend & expand pipes you know... I have a few installers near me that can custom-bend an entire system that looks like factory.

I can't get my car to a muffler shop. Its unregistered, not insured and it has no mufflers on it. The only shops around me are the large chains and you can't bring in what you have and have them install it. They have to supply everything. I need to do this job myself in my garage.

Most midas or meineke franchises will work with you...
As far as not being able to drive it because it is not registered or insured...why bother messing with the exhaust at this point?
I'd get her road-worthy, and worry about the upgrades later (especially if the system on it is functional, even if you don't like the form)
We do make a whole cat-back for the '75-'79 C3 (Part #16710) that should be a direct fit. I don't have a lot of information on the constituent parts of the system, but I'll see if someone can help me out there.
I converted my stock 1980 exhaust to dual using a system from Allens http://www.allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com/
I believe they have the correct curved/angled pipe to get you to the muffler. Send an email, but I think calling would be easier. Tell them what you have and what you need, hopefully they can help.

The dimensions aren't in the catalog or product description for the cat-back, but I'm checking to get a part number if they're one of our universal mufflers.

Mufflers are 4" x 9" x 14" ovals with 2.5" in/out and an offset shape.
Part numbers are 11226 (Stainless finish) or 14326 (Polished finish).
