Would someone who has this engine send me a message so we can email a little bit.
Bought this 80 vette with this engine already in it. New toy, it's fun.
Yes, it's a 350 with 400hp! With 400hp I should be grinning ear to ear when I stomp on it. I'm not. Mildly impressed is all.
Rochester 4bbl carb, no other modifications that I'm aware of.
When the 4bbl opens up it's ok. I'm just finding it strange that I can't even break traction from a dead stop. Thinking something is WRONG!
Another thing that is bugging me is that it has "run-on" when I turn off the ignition. I read that it has to do with timing. So i hook the timing light up to it - NO MARK. Well, there IS a mark, but not visible with the light. Is it possible that the distributor is 180deg out of time?
Need to make sure the dizzy hold down is tight. Put the light back on it and turn dizzy until mark lines up at 10 -12 degrees BTDC with advance disconnected and plugged, engine idiling and at operating temp if dizzy was loose. I would reset timing even if dizzy not loose just to be sure the timing is correct.
The concern I have is the factory line (mark) that's ground in the harmonic balancer isn't even in the light. Where ever it is, it isn't near the tab on the engine block.
Its torque that allows a car to break traction and your engine just doesn't have enough torque at idle. If you really want to break traction you'll need a higher stall torque converter and a decent set of gears like 3.73's but then your gas mileage will really suffer. I recommend swapping in a beefed TH700R4 and a set of 3.73's and then you can break traction all you want and still have decent gas mileage. It takes cubic inches and cubic dollars to have a genuine street/strip car.
Remember crate engines are rated as GROSS HP, not net, like all cars today. 400 GROSS HP is about 325 net HP which is not a ton by today's standards....
take it to the local shop and have it tuned up. make sure to ask if they have someone who is over 50. he will be the only one that knows how to tune the carb. it should run great.
