Default Question about bbc water pump...

The question is… I noticed two styles of backing plates for big block and small block watery pumps. One is molded stamped steel and the other simple flat stamped steel. Can anyone shed light on these differences and what years they were used. I recall there were different years when this appeared. Also, what did the correct bolts look like on the back of the pumps. I believe early early one's might have had a slotted head then it eventually turned into bolts and then eventually turned into bolts with captured washers? Man, am I picky??? Thanks

I've got a few bolts lying around from a couple of 284 pumps and at least one rear cover. I'll post up some pics along with the casting dates of the pumps they came from when I get back from vacation.

Default Thanks I appreciate the come back...

I found out that the flat backing plates were very early big block (396) engines. 68 BBC should have the stamped steel backing plate. I am uncertain about what type of bolt to use. I found regular TR and RBW bolts in there with copper washers. I seem to recall that they used a recessed head bolt with a captured washer. But, I rarely get into water pumps so I don't remember for sure. Your help is appreciated. Best to you and thanks!
