Getting ready to order the exhaust for my 74 BB. Have read a lot of threads and need to decide which system to purchase. I know CC has a system to fit, and then there is Allen's. Also Pypes exhaust, don't know to much about them, and of course getting a custom made system. Would a system with a "x" or "H" pipe be preferred??
I imagine staying with a 2 1/2" system would be best for my build. Thought about McJacks for the exhaust manifolds, but will probably stay with the stock ones. Trying to keep at a reasonable cost, but knowing that sometimes that is hard to do.
Not looking for anything overly loud, just a system that would be right for the 454.
Thanks for any opinions, suggestions or links that helps me decide which one to get...........................Tom

I had a local, very talented exhaust guy do a custom bent 2 1/2" system on my 68 427/390. I bought Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers to go with the system. I also stuck with the stock exhaust manifolds. Louder than stock and a nice muscle car sound when you get on it. No resonance and just a bit louder than stock when cruising. The Dynomax mufflers flow very well. If you have a reputable guy locally, that's what I would do.

That is a consideration, have to check out the shops in my area. Do you have the part number for those mufflers, will check them out.....Thanks........
All they do is modify the sound pulses between the two halves. They do nothing for performance.
I like the sound of the two halves firing independently. And there is a reason true duels are used in race cars....performance.
Race cars DO NOT use x y pipes.
If you use an X or Y pipe you no longer have a duel exhaust.
You have a single exhaust with duel outlets. There is a difference, contrary to what many people will jump in on to defend their choice of y or x pipe.
This is a true Duel exhaust.

The Dynomax mufflers don't have any baffling material in them, do they? I think I bought a set once for my Jeep Grand Cherokee and hated the tin can sound. I hated them so much, I pulled them off and threw them away. I'm sure there is a difference with a different vehicle, but after that experience, I'm afraid of the "just a metal can" muffler.
*Edit*
They do have baffling in them. These are NOT the mufflers I hated so much. Actually I might like these. I just looked them up on their website. I really like the Ultra Flow Welded design. Straight through with baffling material.
Ultra Flows don't have any baffling - they are straight through & use CRF packing material - they are the BEST flowing mufflers on the market. They do not "tune" the exhaust note any - Magnaflows are knockoffs of the Ultra Flows & sound essentially the same. If you want some sort of baffled Dynomax muffler, you'll have to go to the Super Turbo line - they are an excellent performing & sounding turbo muffler. They have a 3-tube internal design with flow directors, & the center chamber is wrapped with a fiberglass blanket. The blanket will however break down over time & they will get louder. If you want to take a look at a pretty cool design "box" muffler, check out the Cherry Bomb Vortex (above). Excellent flow & I've heard them & I think they sound great. Very similar to an internal design I designed a 15 years ago.

I believe they are 17764 and 17765 Walker Dynomax Super Turbos.

Thanks for the part #'s .....appreciated.....
Also anyone know about the Dynomax VT edition muffler??? It appears to me that the sound clip on their web site sounds the best with this particular muffler. Any thoughts or comparisons to the Super turbo ones listed above???? Thanks......Tom

The advantage of buying a system with pre-bent pipe is that they're mandrel bent (Magna Flow, Pypes, etc.). If you look at the picture of the local bent pipe, you can see where the pipe necks down on the inner radius of the bend. If you're going to go with 2 1/2" pipe some tight bends can reduce your pipe diameter to nearly 2". I've seen the dyno difference between the two (toured MAC Performance when I first started as a dealer for them) and you'd be surprised how much it restricts the flow. I used a Pypes system on my 05 Dodge Ram and it was pretty good, not as good as MagnaFlow, but a couple hundred cheaper! I'm planning to use their Violater series on my 72 454.
