Default Tachometer amperage

I have a '76 350 and the tach has not worked in the 2 yrs that I have owned it. I have pulled the dash to get it out and noticed that one of the strips on the circuit board was bad. I replaced that strip with a wire and plugged the tach back in. As soon as the engine started, two more copper strips went up in smoke. I have a new board ordered but am wondering if I am getting too many amps to the tach. Can any one tell me what the amp reading should be going to the tach? Thanks so much!

This is a known issue with the boards and the only way to fix it is to order a replacement board that isn't designed like the original. My board also had a burned trace and after replacing the board the tach works great. A component on the board goes bad and draws too much current.

Thanks Jim - that is very helpful. I just did not want to fry the new board.
