Default vir install help

Hi

I want to install a new VIR in my 75 with stock A/C system 134a.
I have the factory manual.

Is this difficult?
Do you all have any advice/tips to to do this?
What should I look out for?

Thanx in advance

A

Consider putting on a "VIR Eliminator" kit. This will bring your system up to the more "Modern" Late 77 and later systems. And the VIR needs adjustment to work with 134. Might as well get the eliminator kit.

Thanx for the info.

Do I need to change anything to install a VIR Eliminator kit or will it bolt right in with any other changes.

Thanx

The kit comes with everything you need to remove the VIR and place the kit in same place. It is in a very awkward place to work and removing the lower panel inside the wheel well helps from under.

Since you need more than just the VIR change, compressor etc.. AND you live where you need COLD reliable air. Consider a change over to a Vintage Air system. It replaces the entire heat and A/C system to a modern system that will fit in with your interior controls so you wouldn't notice any cosmetic change inside. It comes with everything and will blow cold air like a 2015 system and not like a 1980 system.

Before buying anything add up all the costs you will have and balance it against the Vintage Air. Don't find yourself spending more than it would have cost to replace the entire system with a modern and perfectly controlled system.

No need to replace the comp unless it is not functioning or it is leaking. the VIR kit is all you need.
The vintage air will probably blow harder but a functioning stock system with VIR eliminator will work adequately.

My condenser is good and the hoses are new.

Default agree with the above.

agree with the above, all good advice I think.

My experience and suggestions:
*installed a VIR eliminator kit in my 76, worked great although I did have to play with belts to eliminate the belt squeal every time the a/c kicked on. I did have the OEM A6 compressor.

*tough place to access and work I think, helps to remove the windshield wiper fluid bottle (or maybe it was the antifreeze overflow plastic bottle? the one in the way, ha) and the bottom fender triangular panel to gain access from the top and the bottom both.

*might as well take everything out and clean the evap and condenser with cleaning fluid from NAPA. the evap box is likely full of leaves and critter droppings. plus I would buy a good set of flare wrenches plus the flare wrench socket that looks like a crows foot but is for a flare nut wrench to access the connections. I had to be careful not to cross thread the new flare nut connections nor contaminate/nick the new o rings.

Good luck and hope this helps! like a lot of C3 jobs, insane persistence, foul language and cold beer will get you results!

Nice looking 75 Corvette!!!
