Default Removing Rear crossmember

Hey guys, I'm trying to remove the read crossmember and it won't buldge...differential carrier is removed and I removed both nuts on each sides...is there something else I should do? The bushing is kinda weird but I'm not sure its that. I tried to pry it off but it doesn't give at all...I must be missing something but I really don't know what.

Sounds like you need a bigger pry-bar. Those bushings are rubber and really wedged in there. It took quite a bit of work to get the rear X-member off my '70. It also had the weight of the differential still on it helping along. ~Juliet

Those things are a #^$%^$# t get off. When I had mine torn a part I had a 350 Pound friend hanging off a three foot pry bar, and it still took a lot of time and effort to get it off. We were lifting the front end of the car off the rack from all the weight we were putting on the rear to get it off.

Get out the penetrating oil and keep working on it.

BE CAREFUL. When it lets go, there lots of weight looking for the floor (especially if the diff is still attached)!!!

A pry bar is the secret. It will come loose. Leave one side bolted up tight and pry the other side (with that bolt loosened to the last few threads).

When one side is loose, tighten up the loose bolt a bit (to get a few more threads) and then loosen opposite bolt and pry again.

Be careful of the weight.

By the way, Lokay, careful of the large rubber cushions (about 4.5" diameter). Don't damage them if you can avoid it.......for two reasons.

1. They're a brute to remove from the crossmember and hard to reinstall if you damage them.

2. They're EXPENSIVE.......approximately $US70.00 each!

Leave the bolts partway on so it doesn't go flying when it gives way.

It took a crowbar and a 5lb hammer and lots of whacks to get mine off but finally gave way.

I bought a 5 foot pry bar, and it was still hard!

And keep the bolts on a little!

Am I the only one that got them off without getting a hernia ?
I took mine down during th efirst month of ownership, but I don't
remember having a problem. Guess I got lucky.

It shoots off like cork out of a champaigne bottle...

I second the 5 ft pry bar.

I kept my jack about an 1/8 inch below the diff. When it breaks loose, the bushings won't clear the mounts.
