First, is this a new to you 76'? Have you ever driven a car with a carburetor before? The smell of some gas is normal as it is an open system, but it shouldn't be enough to make you dizzy or anything serious like that.
What state is your Corvette in? Is it ready for some TLC? Give us some more details...
Replace all the rubber lines (including the ones between your tank and the steel lines).
It cost next to nothing and will give you some peace of mind.

I have a 76 and in the last 3 months I replaced the rubber line between the pump and carb twice already. The 1st time was because of some very old crumbling lines, the 2nd was my fault as I kept on disconnecting it to play with the carburetor. The leak was a sneaky one: the clamp dig into the rubber and the leak was only visible when a bit of pressure was applied onto the line...
After replacing the lines, the gas smell in the car almost disappeared and the garage does not smell like a petrol station anymore...
My 77 had the same problem, I replaced the sending unit gasket on the tank & also the hoses. Use Fuel Injection hose, which they claim will stop the deterioration of the new EPA gas eating the hoses. It is a little more money, but what the Heck. Gene
