Default QJet alternative - BBC stock hood

After years of "sticking" w the old QJet I am pretty much fed up. The carb has been worked, rebuilt and tinkered w by pretty much everyone including Lars. As I sped most of my time out of country when I am back I want to drive. Additionally nobody locally can get the thing to really run "right". I am nearly done with it

What are my options? I am running a healthy 489 w MacJacks shorties, plenty of cam and a Holley Street Dom intake, the set up fits under the hood and is painted to look stock.

Carb needs to be good for 500+ hp, reliable and work w an intake to fit under my hood.

Any advice would be apprecited

Thanks Chris

I was in the same sinking boat.
Ever try to get a correct '68 BB Q'Jet?
You can figure on $12-1400.00 US.
I found a new old stock Edelbrock 1401 for 300 bucks.
It's been on now for about a year.
Press the accelerator pedal once sets choke, cool I didn't have that feature before.
Two to three pumps it fires right up.
Drive all day 11-12 mpg local.
Cruises at 80+ all day on turnpike with 3:08 rear.
I wasn't looking to spin the tires off the car.
It works as described, reliable and parts avail.
Carb has been discontinued by Edelbrock but seems like there's
still allot out there to be had.
I had the wrong carb on my car when I bought it so this was a huge
improvement.
Stay away from commercial rebuilds, yeah I wasted 300 bucks on one of them prior to buying the Edelbrock.
Another life lesson

Not running yet but I picked a Quickfuel SS 830CFM.

Everything fits under the hood with a LS6 intake and 1/2 spacer. The Holley should clear with no issue.

When I had my 454, I scrapped the Qjet and I put on an Edelbrock 750cfm with a 1/2" Spacer, and a low profile air filter. It squished the filter a bit when I closed the hood. (soft filter, so I didn't hurt anything)

Just to make sure you have good clearance, I would change to a square barrel intake, (I'm assuming your dominator has the offset primary and secondary for the Qjet) and I would run at least an 800 cfm carb.
Something like the Edelbrock 7163 intake, or similar Holley if you prefer, and an 1813 carb or Holley DP if money isn't an object. That was pretty much my plan before I decided on an LS swap.

This is completely my opinion and I have no scientific evidence to back it.

I just pulled the BBC last weekend in favor of modern power.

I replaced my Qjet with a Holley spread bore with electric choke and have been very happy on my '70 454. It fit under my stock hood with no issues and is very easy to tune.

I am thinking of getting a QJet from SMI. That way I can keep my port matched intake and look almost stock. I guess I can give up on QJets yet. I must like the punishment

Any recommendations for SMI? Cliff's rebuild list is 12 months!

My buddy had an SMI 2bbl on a 350 for his circle track car.
Engine ran amazing, when he wasn't stuffing it into a wall. lol.

We never had to mess with the carb once tuned, so I can't really say I have much experience with them, except that it worked great in that application.

Phalanx, good feedback. I need something like that. I don't need the last little bit of performance, just something reliable. Mind you the motor makes 500 hp ... so as long as i am in the ballpark its a good place to be!!
