Default Correct Hood for a Big Block

Hello All,

I am putting a 454 motor into my 1970 corvette. It had a 350 with a Edelbrock performer intake and holley carb. Will the big block with the same intake and carb fit under the stock hood? I would be putting on a stock big block/LT-1 hood. I do not want to go to an L88 type hood. Does anyone have any experience?

Thank you in advance,

Dhasso

you would need a drop base air cleaner. You would also need a short filter element which defeats the purpose of increased airflow.

almost any BB intake other than stock height, steel or Aluminum
will require some minor modifications to fit under stock BB hood.

To fit I used a LS6 BBC intake and Quick Fuel carburetor.

This allows the shield and spacer to be used and I still had a little more room.

The performer and holley should clear with a low profile air filter.
I had an edelbrock 1407 on the stock intake with a 1/2" spacer, and low filter, but I squished the filter slightly with the hood closed. There isn't much room, even with the BB hoods. That 1/2" spacer was the difference from clearing and not in mine.

I don't know where you're located, but I am selling my LT-1 style hood in favor of an L-88 wiper delete.

If you're interested PM me.

My experience is as follows :

I installed a 454 with a stock intake and qjet in my 76. It fir under the hood just barely using one of the triangle mesh air cleaner. Then I installed an ecklers low rise hood ( about 2" above stock ), and was able to install a regular 14 x 3 air cleaner. I then installed an edelbrock performer intake. I was not able shut the hood untill I installed a drop base on the 14" air cleaner. Right now there is only about 1/8" between the round head bolt holding the air cleaner down and the hood.
I am hoping that when I install my L88 hood I just bought, I can go back to the regular base for the air cleaner. The edelbrock performer is a pretty high manifold compared to stock.

I am using stock Alum. intake and Holley,
I made my own custom dropped base air cleaner.
everything fits nicely under a BB hood.

Have you had a chance to check the fit of that L88 hood? Any body work needed to get it to fit properly? Where did you get the hood? Thanks!
