Default Starter help!

OK, so I am getting SO tantalizingly close to getting this car on the road its driving me nuts! Car is a 78 with a full roller 383 stroker. I had the car running, but needing tuned better and replaced a leaking water pump. I should mention that while I was at it, I tinkered with the elec choke a bit as it did not seem to be working. After getting it sealed back up I have been unable to get it to run for more than a few seconds. I am sure this is a matter of timing and/or carb tuning, but the more immediate issue is that after 20 min or so of trying to get it running, the starter engaged and would not stop! I had to disconnect the battery (not easy to do in this car when you are frantic!). Wires are not hot, and although there was a smell from the starter, it dissipated rather quickly once I got the battery disconnected. Any idea whats going on? DId I fry my starter?

The starter solenoid pulls large contacts together to connect the battery to the starter, it could be stuck. Other than that it would have to be in the switch.

I have never known of a starter solenoid "sticking" as long as the return spring is used but I have known of starters continuing to run when the Bendix is messing REAL tight into the flywheel ring gear teeth. Shims are readily available to correct that problem.

The Bendix could be stuck. But - OP said engine wasn’t running.

If the Bendix is stuck in the flywheel, the starter will continue to run, but the engine would have to be running. If engine is running with Bendix stuck the starter will act like a generator.

The starter motor is electric, so it needs electricity to run…. If you shut the power off to the solenoid, the starter would have to stop. I have seen the spring break, or the contacts can get overheated and fuse.

I also said it could be in the switch -if the engine is not running, it has to be electrical.
