First of all "double pumper" carburetors are made specifically for drag and track racing where an engine speed of 4000+ rpm can be maintained. For street use ONLY use vacuum secondary or AVS carburetors to prevent low speed bogging.

For an intake, I'm running a Team G p/n 7530. Carb height is about the same as stock intake. I have a 1-3/4" drop base and a 4" x 14" filter under my stock hood. I also have a Holley Street HP 650 DP. I would suggest a 750 for a 383. I would also recommend a hydraulic roller cam. My car is street use only but I like a bit more power than stock. Unless you have a lead foot, there is nothing wrong with using a mech'l secondary carb with dual accelerator pumps on the street.

The key to hood clearance is a drop base air cleaner. On my 77, with the stock hood, I have Edel. RPM air gap maifold and a 3/4 inch adapter under the carb. The air cleaner is 1.5 inch drop base with 3 inch element. Its tight, but it fits.
I'm running a Comp Cams Hydarualic roller--XR282HR--in my 406 in my camaro...10.03:1 static. Sounds nice, idles well at 800 rom, and holds decent vacuum (11", if I remember correctly)...
750 Holley DP here...tuned properly a DP is perfectly fine for the street...

I do not agree with your statement. I have 750 double pumpers on two cars and have no problem with bogging during street use.
No factory engine has ever come with a mechanical secondary double pumper carburetor for the reason I stated. And that includes the powerful L-88 and 426" Hemi.
