This may be dumb question but how the heck do you get the shifter **** off a Doug Nash 5-speed. I want to put a custom one on my 72 I just bought and that sucker is on tight. Also, what is the size and threads on the shifter?
Thanks,
Ayesijuan

What shifter do you have on it? I have a Hurst shifter with my DN5spd, and IIRC it's just a 3/8 stud on the top of the shifter, with a lock/jam nut under the ball to keep it from vibrating loose.

I don't know. I just bought it off of the forum about 2 months ago and tried to take it off by twisting on it and it did not budge. I didn't see a jam nut underneath it just looks like a seperate piece of metal between the **** and the ball.

??? Are you talking about the ****/ball on top of the stick/handle?
Post a pic of your setup if you can.
I'm assuming some fool didn't put some threadlocker on the threads.

You got it! Dammit, I was afraid of that! I emailed the previous owner and he told me it was put on with loctite.
How the hell do I break it loose? He said heat. I guess I can get a bigass vicegrip or monkey wrench on it cuz I don't mind messing it up cuz I will have a new one made.

Reason: want to put happy face
Before you go to tools that will leave marks on the ****, try a nylon strap wrench. They bite hard and won't leave tool marks in the surface. I have one that works in a 1-1/4" to 6" range.

You HAVE to be kidding me. LocTite? For a shifter ****? What kind of fool would use LocTite to secure a shifter ****? You'll have to heat the **** to around 1000 degrees to defeat the LocTite so if the **** is plastic its history.
I would wrap several layers of painters tape around the **** as you might as well try to protect it. A wrap type wrench mentioned, or a pipe wrench may be required but you will probably have to use a propane torch to heat up the shifter shaft hot enough to make the locktite pliable.
I wouldn't go chrome myself as it will be very hot in the summer but that's just my thought.
Thanks, I have a heat gun I am going to try. I am going to get one like the one in my picture to match the paint and change the rat fink out for corvette emblem. I am also going to match the red & yellow flames and pin stripe around the big block hood
