1981 Speedometer Modification and Silver Trim repaint
. Shortly after though I noticed the first digit stuck on 9, so I took out the speedometer and found the ribbon was broken between the first two digits. After surfing the Corvette Forum I found for the last 20 years many members with classics sent their gauges off to Redline Gauge and Clock Repair for cleaning, repairing, recalibrating and refacing with great reviews. So being that Uncle Sam thought an 85Mph speedometer would make people drive slower in that era I figured the Vette deserved a little better and have one that goes up to 140Mph. I sent the speedometer up to John on Monday, it got there Wednesday at noon and he took it apart, cleaned, refaced for 140Mph, put in a new ribbon, recalibrated, tested and sent back to me Thursday. I got it back this afternoon, put it back in the car and tested. Speedometer looks excellent, runs smooth, no more bouncing needle and the odometer is working too. He even cleaned up the rust pits and painted the back to factory condition. I took a few before and after pictures attached. Great service and work by Redline Gauges and Clock. Thanks for others on the forum for your reviews, they helped me become aware of Johns great work.Since I pulled out the dash lens it was time to change the gold dash, center console and vent trim from what the previous owner painted to gold and back to the original chrome/silver metallic trim. I wet sanded off most of the gold and silver underneath, cleaned and repainted. I found a Testors Enamel Argent Silver Metallic paint pen at Hobby Lobby and was done in no time. The pen produced a very professional looking strip on the trim also.
Now if I could find a reproduction steering wheel Camel color with black spokes or a place to redo my original at a decent price, that would get my interior just about complete.

Already have a nicely done 165 speedo, but I'm hoping that Redline should also be able to do a late C3 tach reface with custom redline, even tho not shown on their site.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
If you google Redline Gauge and Clock Repair and then go to the speedometer page (http://www.redlineg.com/redlineg/Speedometers.html) they have a listing for repair costs and modifications They were great people to work with and fast turnaround. My cost as posted on their website was 130 bucks for the speedo conversion to 140 MPH, including repairs and shipping back, but well worth it.
Good luck
Randy
