I replaced the alternator on my '80 with a higher output unit some time ago. I used to drive it almost every day and didn't really recall having a problem with it then, but now I've noticed that it does not charge immediately. The car sits a lot now and has to be jumped off frequently since the clock seems to run it down after a few weeks.
I didn't know it that might have something to do with it. After a few minutes of driving time showing a discharge, the needle will suddenly pop over to show that it's charging. Someone said that the newer alternator does not have a "tickler" and that they gave me the wrong one for the car.

I had a 100 amp 10 SI unit when I installed an electric fan. It lasted 3K miles and damaged half the wiring before I switched to a CS130 100 amp alternator. 12K miles later its works great with electric fan, AC and lights on driving 70 mph on 90 degree night...

I'll try to get more specific information, but it looks almost identical the the original. Same wiring and all. Bolted right on and wired the same.
it is not getting the power when first started to energize and begin charging until it leaks enough current internally to start. that's what you are seeing. you likely have a wiring problem. check the #1 excitation wire (Ignition wire) for power. left of the two terminal plug looking at the rear.
