Default M21 differences

Does anyone know what the difference between a M21 installed in a small block car and one in a big block car? Was looking in the 1968 AIM and the L79 M21 has a different part number than a L36(and I'm assuming L68 and L71)M21.

No difference that I've ever heard. No reference to any differences in my rebuild manual either (ie. no breakdown between bigblock and smallblock), unless they had a diff countergear teeth count.

Countergear teeth count was either ; 17,19, 22, or 27.

That does seem to be the difference between the 2 M21 parts numbers. Turns out that its not really a BB or SB thing other than the fact that all M21 equippped SB cars share the same speedo drive gear thus the L79 designation under one M21 part #.

There was a production change somewhere back in there. They went from a 7/8 diameter countershaft to 1"
